Col du Chaussy, considered as one of the most scenic riding routes in the European Alps, is a high mountain pass, at an elevation of 1,533m above the sea level. It is located in the Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France.
The road encompasses miles of stunning views through twisty hairpin corners, high elevations and steep grades, including the Lacets de Montvernier – or Hairpins of Montvernier – are an astonishing piece of mountain road engineering. The road climbs sharply via 17 hairpins tightly stacked one on top of another in just 3km.
There are two possible routes to reach the top of Col du Chaussy. Starting from La Chambre, the ascent is 14.4 km long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 1062 meters and the average percentage is 7.4%. And from Pontamafrey, the ascent is 14 km long. Over this distance, the elevation gain is 1031 meters and the average percentage is 7.4%.
Are there any accommodation or camping options along the way?
There is a nearby biker accommodation located in Montaimont town that offers free secured parking for motorbikes. There are also plenty of accommodation in the towns of Landry, Savoie and Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne
Interesting sights on the route
The road up to the Col du Chaussy starts with the famous “Lacets de Montvernier” or Hairpins of Montvernier, a special 3 km stretch with 17 hairpins as the road virtually climbs a cliff. The ascent continues to discover beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and through the hamlets of Montvernier. The road climbs a gap, with the village Le Chatel on the right and a old medieval looking tower (Tour Berold de Saxe) on a knoll over the valley of the Arve.
What is the best time of year to travel the route?
The Summer and Autumn are glorious seasons in the mountains with warm, sunny days and cooler evenings. From May to October (and often November) which is perfect for road biking. The Col du Chaussy is closed due to snowfall over winter.
Where are people able to get fuel when they are riding the route?
Nearest petrol station can be found in the towns of Pontamafrey-Montpascal and Sainte-Marie-de-Cuines.
