For anyone exploring Poland on a motorbike it’s seriously worth considering riding the Hundred Curves Road (Droga 100 Zakrętów). As the name suggests, the road takes in 100 fantastic twists and turns. The road runs for 23km between Radkow and Kudowa Zdroj, near the Czech border in south west Poland. It rises up to 789m high as it cuts through the Table Mountains National Park (Góry Stołowe). The scenery is fantastic, with thick, mixed forest and fascinating rock formations all around. It’s a fun and exciting ride that offers several chances to go exploring along the way.
Planning your ride on the Hundred Curves Road The Hundred Curves Road is easily reached from the E67/DK8 between Wroclaw and Prague. It’s a nice alternative for anyone planning to travel this route, as there is less traffic and the scenery is a hundred times more interesting. Of course it’s also much more fun to ride than the relatively straight and boring international route. The E67 is easily rejoined from either Radkow or Kudowa Zdroj.
For the most part the road is fairly well tarmaced. It’s not the super smooth, race track surface you may find on larger roads, but it’s certainly smooth enough to have some fun. There are a couple of patchy, potholed areas to look out for, so keep your eyes open.
This gem of a road is not very well known outside of Poland and the only traffic it really sees is local. The majority of vehicles traveling in the area opt for the DK8, leaving the hundred curves road gloriously clear for much of the year. It’s busy with local bikers during the summer, particularly on weekends.
Fuel is abundant in the area and within Poland in general.
Accommodation There are plenty of places to stay along the route and in the surrounding area with guest houses and hotels being rife. The spa town of Kudowa Zdroj is fantastic and affordable accommodation is plentiful in the town. If you’re not in a rush, it’s a nice town to spend a day out of the saddle. There are many spa resorts on both sides of the border if you feel like pampering yourself. Otherwise, Wroclaw is not too far away and is a fantastic city to set up base for a few days.
Food Food is also plentiful throughout the area, with restaurants and cafes common. No trip to Poland is complete without trying one of the many varieties of pierogi. These delicious dumplings are worth seeking out. For the best, avoid the more expensive looking restaurants and look out for a “bar” or cafe style establishment. Being so close to the Czech border, excellent Czech pilsners are abundant so be sure to sample some if the chance arises.
Weather considerations The road is typically open throughout the year and is plowed during snowfall. With that said, during adverse conditions some of the higher sections may be closed off for a time. For the majority of the year the going is very good, though late summer and early fall are excellent times to ride the road. As the leaves turn from green to orange and gold, the whole place is transformed. Towards the end of fall many leaves will have fallen and can make the road fairly slippery. Mist is also common from October onwards.
Sights The mountains, forests and national parks are full of trails. For nature lovers this area is a paradise and there are many parking places, allowing you to explore. Climb to the top of the flat “Table mountains” for spectacular views. The spa town of Kudowa Zdroj is worth a visit. You can find a toy museum, a skull and bone chapel and a museum of folk culture, complete with windmill.
