Description

The Panorama Route offers breathtaking and scenic views thus it is definitely worth a riding experience. It is known for its rich cultural heritage, historical sites and waterfalls.

It is situated in the Mpumalanga province, South Africa located along the northeast of the Greater Drakensberg Escarpment, with the canyon starting at Bourke’s Luck Potholes and ending at the Three Rondawels. The route travels along the 33 km long Blyde River Canyon.

The drive starts on the R532 north of Graskop, branching off onto the R534 which forms a scenic loop and rejoins the R532.

The most scenic part of the Panorama Route is the world’s 3rd largest canyon, the Blyde River Canyon. Another highlight is is God’s Window which gives provides panoramic views over the vast lowveld of South Africa.

How many kilometres is it / How long does it take to ride it?
It’s roughly 70 km (45 miles) one-way starting in Graskop. You can drive the route approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes straight through but with the attractions along the route, allow a day or so to enjoy the ride.

Are there any accommodation or camping options along the way?
There is a wide range of accommodation options in the Mpumalanga from backpackers to campsites, caravan parks, self-catering, B&Bs, guest houses, lodges and hotels that you can choose from.

Interesting sights on the route?
The Panorama Route tour is home to breathtaking views and some of the most spectacular landscapes. Highlights of the ride are the famous Blyde River Canyon aka Three Rondavels Viewpoint, Pinnacle Rock, Wonder View, God’s Window, Lisbon Falls, Berlin Falls, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, Lowveld View. Hazyview town is a popular base on the Panorama Route for Kruger Park safaris, only 10 km’s from the closest Kruger gate.

Is the route ever closed over winter?
The route is open year-round and is actually best driven during winter when it is dry, for the wet season brings with it mists and rain that, whilst beautiful, hinder the views.

Where are people able to get fuel when they are riding the route?
You need to keep an eye on the fuel gauge as the the distances between petrol stations are quite large. However there are several petrol stations in Ohrigstat and Graskop.

Very jealous of anyone at the Dust 2 Dawson at the moment. Managed to get there a few years ago and had a great time.
