Ruta CH-265

Chile, South America

Description

Riding along the Ruta Ch-265 is unpredictable and tough but, for its striking beauty, it’s worth it. This gravel road is one of the world’s most scenic drives. Located in the Aysén Region of the Chilean Patagonia, it connects the major towns of Puerto Guadal and Chile Chico. The Ruta CH-265 joins up with the Carrera Austral (Ruta 7), a famous route which runs through southern Chile.

The Ruta CH-265 isn’t a particularly easy road to ride due to its gravely surface, unpredictability, and winding turns. So, take it easy if riding it, especially on the downhill sections. With this said, most of the road surface is actually hard-packed dirt, so makes for an extremely enjoyable ride for all you off-road enthusiasts.

How many kilometres is it / How long does it take to ride it?

The Ruta CH-265 road is 124 km (77 mi) long and, if riding nonstop, you could reach the Argentinian border in less than 3 hours.

Are there any accommodation or camping options along the way?

There are a few campsites on offer at Chile Chico but, for who are inclined, you can venture into the wild and set up where you please. A large part of the route is fenced off for cattle but there are still spots to set up camp. Camping on the pebbly beach of the lake near Chile Chico is also a good option.

Interesting sights on the route?

If you feel like making a stop, Puerto Guadal is a friendly, picturesque town. The town, known for its fishing, also has shops, accommodation, restaurants, a post office, petrol station, and a lovely stretch of lakeside beach.

One of the most notable destinations nearby is the Marble Cathedral, locally known as Capilla de Marmol. It’s located next to the second largest lake in South America, the General Carrera Lake.

If you head to Reserva Nacional Lago Jeinimeni you’ll be treated to views of two beautiful lakes, the Lago Jeinimeni, which has a light blue colour, and the turquoise green coloured Lago Verde.

What is the best time of year to travel the route?

January and February are the busiest times to ride this route, as most of the festivals take place during these months. The best time to ride the route is from mid-November until the end of the year as there’s fewer tourists, less traffic, better weather, and the prices are generally cheaper.

Is the route ever closed over winter?

The Ruta CH-265 is open all year round but the weather in the area is unpredictable. In winter, the weather can be particularly hazardous.

Where are people able to get fuel when they are riding the route?

Gas stations can be found in Chile Chico or Puerto Guadal.

No luck on a chopper, but a nice view above the Ha’il bivouac at the #dakar2023 after the previous day’s flash flooding on the stage. #dakar #dakarinsaudi
Get to the chopper! Trying to hitch a ride (unsuccessfully) on one of the #dakarrally2023 choppers. Still have time …. #dakarinsaudi #dakar #advrider

Much respect for the #originalmotul class riders in the #dakar2023. Each night they service their own bikes while the others rest.
Very jealous of anyone at the Dust 2 Dawson at the moment. Managed to get there a few years ago and had a great time.
