Riding the Strzelecki Track takes you on a historic track through the Strzelecki Desert. Travelling 475 km between Lyndhurst and the township of Innamincka, riders pass through harsh but beautiful desert landscapes. From the surreal blood red sand dunes to the arid scrublands and gushing creeks, the route passes through some of the remotest areas in the country. There are a number of sights tucked away along the road and several options for detours.
Planning your ride on the Strzelecki Track
Most people start this route from Lyndhurst, which is easily accessed from the Outback Highway. From Innamincka the Adventure Way can be joined, heading for Brisbane and the Gold Coast, or Sydney.
Road surface
The days of the Strzelecki Track being a wild, unforgiving dirt track are sadly long gone. With the introduction of mining in the area, the majority of the route is a formed gravel road, with increasing amounts of fully sealed sections. That said, after rain it can become a lot trickier. In dry weather most vehicles can handle it, though a bike with good clearance is recommended. If you plan to explore past Innamincka to Cooper Creek or Coongie Lakes National park, expect more off road conditions and sand. The Old Strzelecki Track offers a bit more of a challenge and splits off from the main track south of Innamincka.
Traffic
The Strzelecki Track has become increasingly popular with 4×4 tours and self drivers, as well as bikers, campers and just about any other vehicle, in good conditions. Trucks from the mining operations may also be encountered. Itβs busiest during school holidays, June/July.
Fuel
There is no fuel available along the Strzelecki Track, but it can be found at Lyndhurst and Innamincka. Long range tanks or a spare jerrycan are recommended for bikes with smaller tanks.
Accommodation
The Strzelecki Track can be completed in a day, but if you prefer to take your time there are a number of options. On the Outback highway you can find beds, campsites and caravan parks in Leigh Creek, Copley and Lyndhurst. Itβs worth booking hotels in advance during peak season. There is a beautiful free campsite at the Montecollina Bore, about halfway along the route. In Innamincka there is a hotel and camping is permitted in the town common, where facilities are also located. Outside of the town there are more campsites along Cooper Creek and within the regional reserve, though permits are required. These can be obtained at the trading post.
Food
Meals and supplies can be bought at all the previously mentioned towns. Itβs a good idea to stock up on food and water in advance.
Weather considerations
The best time to ride the Strzelecki Track is between April and September when the weather has cooled down a bit. Rain can strike at any time and create difficult riding conditions during and after. Avoid riding between November and March as the temperatures are scorching.
Sights
There are few sights other than the beautiful scenery along this Strzelecki Track. However many visitors enjoy the fantastic water holes, creeks and lakes that can all be accessed. Cooper Creek offers many opportunities for fishing, camping and swimming, while the Coongie Lakes provide spectacular views and sunsets. The Dig Tree at Cooper Creek marks where supplies were buried for the tragic explorers Burke and Wills. Memorial plaques are also located nearby.
