Romania is full of fantastic roads for motorcyclists and the Transrarau Road is one of the best. Also called “The Treasures Road”, it ranks third in the top motorcycling roads in Romania, following the Transalpina and Transfagarasan . The route brings you through the Rarau Mountains and links Bistrita Valley to Pojorata, making it a popular road for tourists.
The road has had some work done to it recently, so it’s now easier to navigate but there are portions that are still narrow and steep. From Chiril to Chalet, there’s a maximum speed limit of 30 km/h (18 mph). The view from the top is simply magnificent, especially on a clear day.
How many kilometres is it / How long does it take to ride it?
The Transrarau road crossing, which runs through the Rarau Mountains, is 26 km (16 mi) long. The route climbs to 1,400 meters above sea level and can be completed in less than 1 hour.
Are there any accommodation or camping options along the way?
There are lots of places to stay at the foot of the mountain, ranging from luxurious to budget-friendly lodges. There are also places to stay in the villages of Câmpulung Moldovenesc and Pojorâta.
Interesting sights on the route?
When travelling the Transrarau pass you’ll get to see some of the most popular tourist attractions of the route, including the Rarau Monastery and Rarau Chalet. The Lady’s Rocks (Pietrele Doamnei) is, arguably, the main attraction along the route.
What is the best time of year to travel the route?
The best time to visit the road is between April and September, as the weathers not too hot. At the weekends the road is busy so, to get the most out of your trip, it’s advised to go on a weekday.
Is the route ever closed over winter?
The asphalt road is open all year round but, in winter, it can be extremely hazardous. So, if you choose to ride it over winter, do so with caution.
Where are people able to get fuel when they are riding the route?
You can fuel up at gas stations in Pojorâta and Calea Transilvaniei.
