Riding the Isle of Skye is akin to crossing over to a mystical and mythical land. The ancient island, located a stone’s throw away from the West coast of Scotland, is full of natural wonder. There are several treats crafted by man that await as well. The island isn’t huge but it’s worth spending some time enjoying everything it has to offer. From the rugged, rocky and wild Cuillin ridge, to the colorful town of Portree, the roads between are just as incredible as the wonders of Skye. Ancient, wild and beautiful, the Isle of Skye is well worth a visit and a must for whisky lovers.
Planning your ride on the Isle of Skye
Sights
Natural wonders can be found all over the island. For nature lovers, check out the Cuillin ridge. This mountain range is the very essence of the wild and rugged nature of Scotland’s West coast. For a bit of Scottish culture check out the Talisker whisky distillery. To sample the water of life, head for the Seumas’ bar at the Sligachan hotel. Home to over four hundred single malt whiskies, it’s no wonder it was recently voted the whisky bar of the year. It’s also conveniently located next door to the Cuillin brewery, so if whisky isn’t your thing, try a craft beer. Finally, the town of Portree is worth a visit for the colourful houses as well as the art and general ambience.
Getting there and away
There are two ways to get to the Isle of Skye. The famous Skye Bridge that connects the island to the mainland is a popular, quick and easy choice. The second option is to take a small vehicle ferry from the fishing village of Mallaig to Armadale. The crossing takes about half an hour and seems the more magical and exciting way onto the island.
For the most part the road surface is fairly good all across the island, though there are relatively few roads. The main road (A87) is smooth tarmac and mostly two lanes. Other smaller roads are typically narrow, one track lanes with passing places. It is very possible to ride pretty much every road on the island relatively easily. Enjoy looping around the island on the various smaller tracks that cut across the land.
As with anywhere naturally beautiful and intriguing, the island is a popular tourist destination. Having said that, even in the peak season the roads are rarely exceedingly busy. Beware of distracted drivers concentrating on the scenery rather than the road.
Fuel is readily available in the towns. Since the island is only 110km from end to end, running out of petrol should not be a problem.
Accommodation and food
There is certainly no shortage of places to stay on the Isle of Skye. From luxurious hotels, to humble bunkhouses, there is an option to suit all. Wild camping in Scotland is legal as long as one doesn’t pitch up too close to private property or roads. There are some fantastic views to wake up to, be it on the coast or inland under the watchful eye of the mountains. The island is full of guest houses and B&Bs for those seeking a little more comfort. The Sligachan area is a fantastic, central location and offers great views. There is a hotel, bunkhouse and ample camping options here.
Food is also readily available. The seafood is fantastic and one can spoil themselves in Portree or Uig. Good old fashioned, hearty pub grub is recommended for those looking for haggis or something more affordable. Fish and chips from Portree harbour make an excellent supper after a day in the saddle.
Weather considerations
The Isle of Skye is a beautiful place, but can be prone to wet and windy weather any time of the year. It doesn’t take long for the weather to change either so waterproofs are recommended. The island takes the brunt of all the Atlantic Ocean has to throw at it.
